Unstructured Data Governance

Unstructured data governance is the application of classification, access and usage policy to documents, presentations, email, chat, wikis and media — the material that constitutes the majority of enterprise data and the majority of what AI systems retrieve.

What is unstructured data governance?

Governance programmes historically concentrated on databases, because databases had schemas to attach policy to. AI reversed the priority: copilots and RAG systems draw overwhelmingly on documents, tickets, decks and chat, where no schema exists and ownership is often unclear. Governing this material requires classification that is generated rather than declared, applied at element level, and refreshed as content changes — otherwise policy describes a snapshot of an estate that has already moved on.
